This September, the James Milner Foundation, the stilian petrov foundation and the Celtic FC foundation held a hugely successful ‘A Match For Cancer’.
James has been a huge campaigner for cancer charities, having worked with Bloodwise since 2012 following Petrov’s acute Leukaemia diagnosis in the same year. Stiliyan’s charity aims to help people who, like him, have been afflicted and affected by the terrible disease and revolutionise the way leukaemia and cancer are treated.
Net proceeds of the match were devoted to tackling cancer through the three equal beneficiary charities, with the money received by the Stiyilan Petrov Foundation and Celtic FC Foundation confirmed as going towards Beatson Cancer Charity and the Schiehallion Ward through Glasgow Children’s Hospital Charity.
The ‘A Match For Cancer’ saw Milner and his friend and former Aston Villa teammate, Petrov, captain opposing squads from the worlds of football and entertainment for one highly enjoyable charity game. Celtic’s First Team Manager, Brendan Rodgers took charge of Petrov’s squad whilst Jurgen Klopp reunited with his Liverpool vice-captain to take charge of Milner’s squad.
Current and ex-footballers from around the world showed their support for the cause, joining the two squads for the day. James Milner’s squad was a star studded line-up with footballers such as Dirk Kuyt, Joe Hart and Luis Garcia taking part. Whilst in Petrov’s squad was Celtic captain, Scott Brown, as well as Hoops legend Henrik Larsson, Manchester United’s Ashley Young and Ballon D’Or winner Hristo Stoichkov amongst others.
The match was a tremendous success as the two sides played out an entertaining 3-3 draw in front of a crowd of over 20,000 at Celtic Park, raising tens of thousands of pounds.
“A Match for Cancer brought together so many great names from football in support of a great cause and of course we also thank everyone who gave their time so generously in taking part.” Celtic FC Chief Executive, Peter Lawwell,
Whilst the evening prior to the match, the two football legends also held a dinner ‘An Evening with Petrov and Milner’, which was attended by over 350 guests. The night gave the guests an opportunity to hear more from the captains about the work they have put into their Foundations and why supporting cancer charities is so important to each of them.
Overall, the weekend was a highly successful and it was a pleasure for the James Milner Foundation to join together with both the Stiliyan Petrov Foundation and Celtic FC Foundation. The two events not only raised a huge amount of money in the fight against cancer but also raised immeasurable awareness for our joint cause.
“Special thanks must also go to everyone who took part in the match and, in particular, Stiliyan and James. Their efforts and the efforts of both of their Foundations in making this event a success have been phenomenal and their continued drive to improve the lives of others is incredible”. Celtic FC Foundation Chief Executive, Tony Hamilton.Back to Latest News
